Much more money-spending

Two packages arrived for me today. The same postman came twice. The first one was my CDJapan order (that I had all but forgotten about), which paradoxically included no CDs at all. The second one was my preorder for Maaya Sakamoto’s “I.D.” photo essay. I also picked up the January issue of Newtype and School Rumble Vol.11. I decided to skip the first print of Sukuran because the bonus extra was just a mini DVD containing preview clips for the upcoming OVA.

ALL MINE!!!

  1. Tenjou Tenge – Maya Natsume (New Colour)
  2. Newtype January
  3. Ghost in the Shell – 1/24 Tachikoma Model Kit (that I’ll never get to build)
  4. School Rumble Vol.11 (running out of characters for the covers?)
  5. Da Capo Second Graduation Vol.2 Limited Edition (I want Kotori instead…)
  6. Maaya Sakamoto “I.D.” Photo Essay

Tokimeki Memorial Nostalgia

Here’s a story.

Some days ago, I was reading through the MegaTokyo forum and came across a thread on the original Tokimeki Memorial (TokiMemo) being ported to the PSP. (clicky if you don’t know what is it)

“That reminds me… I never did manage to get Kasumi’s end in TokiMemo 2…”

I posted a few replies and forgot about the whole thing.

Hikari-chan~

So there I was today, watching the mythical second episode of the two-part OVA based on the original game. It was crap. The producers obviously didn’t want to show the player’s character onscreen because he represented the player and didn’t have an official character design nor voice-over. So the OVA ends up having the girls taking turns to appear onscreen and pretty much nothing else happens. But I still kept watching.

“That reminds me…again… I never did manage to get Kasumi’s end in TokiMemo 2…”

I tried to forget about the whole thing once again. I finished the OVA and closed the folder.

“Don’t even think about it! My PlayStation is probably buried under a ton of game discs and magazines in some well-hidden corner of the storeroom right now. I will never find it!” I told myself.

Suddenly, my Winamp started to play “Going on!” by Bullet 77. The lead vocal of Bullet 77 was Junko Noda. Hikari Hinomoto, the female lead of TokiMemo 2, was Junko’s debuting role.

It was too much for me to bear. TokiMemo 2 was located just beside me, in a stack of mostly-PC games. I tooked the jewel cases out of their cardboard cover and looked through their contents. All five discs, the manual and even that tiny slip of paper that wraps over the spine of the case were present.

Tokimeki Memorial It’s no fancy limited edition, but it’s mine. I made up my mind. I walked to the storeroom and flicked the light switch. The room was full of boxes from when we moved in this year. I had no idea where to start. I started moving the boxes out one by one. I found a huge stack of PC Gamer magazines (which spell “PC GAMER” when you put their spines side by side), my old Tamiya models, a few issues of Newtype USA (which I no longer buy), a huge box of pirated PC and PS1 games and even my Sega Dreamcast. But the PlayStation was nowhere to be seen. I tried plugging in my Dreamcast, but the controller no longer responds and the disc drive failed to read every disc I tried. (I wonder if anyone still repairs these things?) Setting the Dreamcast aside, I once again wandered into the depths of the storeroom.

And there it was. Hidden underneath the bag which contained the Dreamcast was my PlayStation. I jumped for joy. I was so happy I could kiss the PS1 if it weren’t covered with enough dust to choke a grown man.

So anyway, to cut the story short here, I cleaned it thoroughly, plugged it into my TV and placed the first disc of TokiMemo into the top-loading drive. I pushed the power button and prayed, glancing nervously at my deceased Dreamcast. It booted. I watched the opening video. Twice. Ah… memories. The controller’s directional pad wasn’t working, which caused me to panick for a bit until I switched to my backup controller and it worked fine. I don’t like the colour on this one, but at least it works.

Tokimeki Memorial
Fear my 14″ Sony Trinitron TV!

I checked my saved games. They’re all there. God bless Sony engineering. Although it doesn’t really matter since I intend on restarting the game anyway, it’s nice that I still have access to the extras I unlocked through Hikari’s path.

Hikari-chan~~~

Don’t you just love a story with a happy ending? ;_;

Speaking of which, I’m pretty sure I have the EVS append discs for TokiMemo 2 somewhere on my harddisks…

To Heart 2 vs Xbox 360

It’s the question that has haunt men since the dawn of time: Would more people queue for a PC port of a PS2 game or a next-gen console made by Microsoft? (At least in Japan)

TH2X vs 360

Da Capo II Updates

Da Capo II

The official site for Da Capo II (not to be confused with Da Capo Second Season) has been updated once again.

The update reveals yet more characters and the only unknown character left is the player. The newly revealled characters are:

  • Mayumi Kousaka – likes sports and contests, hates people who speak indirectly. Second year and good friend of Otome Asakura.
  • Maika Mizukoshi – school nurse. Mizukoshi… daughter or granddaughter of Moe/Mako?
  • Suginami – good friend of the main character. Seems to take after his name…
  • Wataru Itabashi – good friend of the main character. Likes H. Suginami + this guy = gg main character?

Other then the new characters, the Information page has also been updated with a notice that D.C. II goods will be onsale during the winter Comiket (which is in about two-weeks time). I want all the ones with Nanaka on them. 日本へ行きたい!~

Gmail Mobile

Gmail Mobile

Google has finally come up with an official mobile version of Gmail! Hurray! The normal version works okay in a phone browser, but it wastes too much bandwidth and some phones (like mine) can’t handle the weird javascript multiple redirects that it uses, so it’s good that there’s finally a mobile version.

Gmail Mobile
Now you can access your Gmail account from your mobile phone or device. Just point your phone’s web browser to http://m.gmail.com. Your Gmail account stays synched, whether you access it from the web or the mobile interface. It’s easy to use and it’s free (but yes, your wireless plan could still charge you).

Gmail Mobile

It also has these cool features:
• Automatically optimizes the interface for the phone you’re using
• Opens the attachments you receive in messages, including photos, Microsoft Word documents and .pdf files
• Lets you reply by call to people whose phone numbers are in your Gmail Contacts list

To Heart 2 XRATED

To Heart 2 is a visual novel originally released for the PS2 under the Aquaplus brand name. The transition to PC adds 18+ content and falls under Leaf, essentially the same company by a different name (for their adult titles).

Title screen

It’s very loosely related to the original To Heart, one of the games which Leaf is best known for. Other flagship titles by Leaf include Comic Party, Utawarerumono and Tenshi no Inai 12-gatsu.

Xbox 360 launches in Japan

The Xbox 360 launched in Japan today with great success. Success in the sense that they did manage to start selling them, just that no one is buying.

Kotaku has a very entertaining live coverage of the Japan launch, which I believe can be summed up by this article. And this one too. And my personal favourite.

Okay, let’s stop making fun of Xbox 360 now. It’s a great console. Really. It’s just that a console needs more flagship titles than PC ports and Halo. And isn’t it just a little stupid how Microsoft crippled its multimedia functions so that it won’t eat into Media Center sales? They need to get their priorities right. Still, I bet someone will find a way to stream videos from a regular PC and playback MP3 files not ripped by the 360. Maybe I’ll consider getting one when someone gets XBMC running on it and the price drops to S$200.

At least the Japanese launch will make Xbox 360 more affordable. I forsee game importers bringing the underpriced and easily-obtainable Japanese Premium system to other countries… Ebay prices are probably going to drop soon.

Gundam SEED Heroine 6

I completed Tamaki and Yuma’s paths for To Heart 2 yesterday. Don’t really feel like trying for the rest of the girls. As great as Tama-nee is, I’m glad I didn’t fork out any money for the game.

Just collected my order for Gundam SEED Heroine Vol.6 today.

Gundam SEED Heroine 6
This cost me a few meals

The quality of the figurines from the SEED Heroine series has always been very high (at least for its scale), but I believe they have really outdone themselves this time. The best design of course goes to Lacus. Just take a look at this:

Gundam SEED Heroine 6
hai, kunoichi desu~

With some slight adjustments:

Gundam SEED Heroine 6
I wish I were a pink Haro

Japanese engineering ingenuity at work. This Lacus has replaced the Lacus from Heroine DX (think of it as somewhere between 5 and 6) as the one that always sits on my subwoofer… That is until I get my hands on the 1/6 Lacus from the RAH DX series.
