Abe resigns, Rozen Aso to take over?

After months of taking shit from left and right and three agricultural ministers later, Shinzo Abe finally announced today that he is resigning as prime minister of Japan (YouTube video). The Liberal Democratic Party, which is the ruling party and controls the lower house of the Diet, will be likely to pick one of their own people to replace him.

Rozen Aso
Rozen Maiden + Taro Aso = Rozen Aso

The most likely candidate is Taro Aso (麻生太郎), AKA Rozen Aso, the secretary general of LDP and foreign minister in Abe’s cabinet. Mr. Aso is probably the most well-known politician among the 2ch and Akiba crowd because of his nickname which he got after he was once seen reading a volume of Rozen Maiden at an airport book store. He professes to be a dedicated manga fan and his favourite works include Golgo 13, Nodame Cantible and Kochikame. He gave a speech at Akihabara during the 2006 elections campaign and drew a large crowd (YouTube video). In his speech, he addressed the otaku population directly and spoke on manga-related topics and the soft power of Japanese pop culture.

LDP will be carrying out internal voting on the 19th. If Rozen Aso does take over, he does not need to call for a general election until 2009. However, it is likely that he will be forced by the opposition to call for one within the next few months, and it will be hard to say if LDP’s current reputation can carry the embattled ruling party through.

Still, the first step towards possible otaku world domination?

Utada Hikaru – Beautiful World

Beautiful World
Utada Hikaru – Beautiful World

Beautiful World by Utada Hikaru is the theme song of the new Rebuild of Evangelion movie. I personally think that it’s her best and most awesome song ever, but maybe the relationship to Evangelion is clouding my judgement. I fell in love with this song after watching the movie trailer on YouTube. Hikki performed this song live on yesterday’s Music Station. I translated the lyrics, available here. Why do I always start translating things when my exams draw close? Sigh.

YouTube video embedded after the break.

Big Dreams Little Tokyo: A Half Japanese Comedy

Big Dreams Little Tokyo
For Screening Purposes Only

Big Dreams Little Tokyo (IMDb entry) is one of those movies that seek to explore the meaning of culture in today’s globalizing world that serves as a melting pot of ethnic identities. It has been making its way around various independent film festivals and has received many positive reviews. Two weeks ago, Mr. Dave Boyle, the director and also the lead actor, presented me with an opportunity to review the movie before its DVD and theatrical release in America next year. Of course I was not the only blogger offered to do this, but I did feel a tingle of joy to receive such a request.

Two weeks later, I’m sitting in my room with the screener DVD (digitally watermarked to prevent piracy) in hand and a movie review to write. So here we go.

The future of anime

Futurama
“Welcome to the woooorld of tomorrow!”

I’ve made it no secret that I think distributing media through physical means is an archaic and rapidly shrinking trade. I sincerely believe that everything that can be digitalized will eventually be digitalized, whether you want it or not. It is a destiny that all media companies have to face and it can be an enormous opportunity for those who adapt fast.

And of course, it’s no different for anime. That’s right, it’s rant time.

No more backlogged letters from Odex

Money

According to a forum post by Stephen Sing, as of today (3rd September) no more backlogged letters will be sent out. Odex will not take legal action against you with old evidence. If you stop downloading from today, you are guaranteed, by the man himself, not to get Odex’ed ever.

Original thread on Odex forums:

If an individual stop downloading now, today, on the 3rd September, 2007, he will have no possibility of ever receiving any letters from the copyright holders, (aka the Odex letter) as we will not take anything that he has downloaded before this date against him. We will not send any letters to him.

If an individual continues to download and shows up on our investigation we will send him a letter to ask him to explain why it is so. If he cannot give us a reasonable explanation of why that happened, we will reserve the rights to take legal action against him, with all the evidences that we have collected before and after the 3rd of September (there would necessarily be evidence after the 3rd in order for this to happen).

Apparently an official statement will be released soon, but I think a forum post from xysing is as good as any official statement. I guess they have finally recovered their fees. Well that’s that for BitTorrenting anime I guess. I shall make do with Nico Nico Video.

On another note, I just finished rewatching all five seasons of Futurama. Good stuff.

NUS Anime Bazaar 2007

NUS Anime Bazaar 2007

For some reason, I was coerced into helping to publicize for this event that is happening at the National University of Singapore (NUS) next week. All the really cool stuff takes place at NUS. Anyway, NUS Comics and Animation Society is having some kind of…bazaar or something from 5th to 7th September. It’s really kind of hard to tell from the name. Yeah.

There will be a whole bunch of anime-related dorky activities which you can read about in greater detail in the promotional poster. The location is NUS LT 27 and you can get there via bus 95 from Buona Vista MRT. Also, I won’t be there.

Japanese WikiScanner

Wikipedia

If you’ve been keeping up with tech blogs or digg, you would have no doubt heard about WikiScanner, a project by computer hacker Virgil. Basically it’s a script that, using the freely-available copy of Wikipedia’s database that is regularly updated, search through every single edits for IP addresses that fall in pre-defined ranges. The tool uncovered many interesting edits, mostly corporations and politicians who edit their own articles to delete unfavourable sections or whitewash certain words. Read more about it in Wired and Wikipedia itself.

Anyway, the site was recently translated into Japanese and the bored people in Japan were all over it in like 5 seconds. According to this ITmedia article, some of the interesting edits uncovered so far include Ministry Of Internal Affairs And Communication editing an article related to e-voting security flaws, MEXT edits that praise their own website, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare edits on drugs and, for some inexplicable reason, an 18+ game “Nanatsuiro Drops“. Maybe this falls under the “Health” part. And also, tons of Gundam-related edits from an IP address belonging to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Conspiracies at work or bored salarymen? Go try out WikiScanner for yourself.

BayTSP to the rescue!

Good news for Odex. BayTSP’s chief executive officer Mark Ishikawa is flying all the way to Singapore to help them with their case. And he’s of Japanese descent too! (Well, actually that’s probably unrelated.) Apparently Odex did pay them after all, so I guess it was just a case of terrible paperwork caught in the whirlpool of bureaucratic inefficiencies.

Mr Graham [Ishikawa’s publicist] told Today: “Mark will be working with Odex to demonstrate that we were under contract to Odex and that our data identified the IP addresses of individuals who were downloading and sharing copyrighted material licensed by Odex.”

Now Odex just has to rope in the Japanese studios to establish its right to take civil actions. Read about it on Today Online.

And in a related development, ars technica, one of the most reputable tech blogs on the web, has posted an article on this incident. It doesn’t really offer any new perspective, but hey now we know that at least one other person on the global tube network knows of Singapore’s existence.

Okay, so we aren’t shocked. The whole situation (except for the recent judicial decision) has been sadly predictable and looks set to cost Odex plenty of bad press from its biggest potential customers before this is all over. Will it work out well for the company in the end? Time will tell, but if we judge by the RIAA’s example, cracking down on file-swapping could take years and a serious war chest.

Read the rest of it on ars technica.
